2 great Commandments

160714One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?”  Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one;  you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’  The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”  Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that ‘he is one, and besides him there is no other’; and ‘to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,’ and ‘to love one’s neighbor as oneself,’—this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”  When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question. (Mark 12:28-34, NRSV)

What is the greatest commandment?

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind, and the second is like it, love you neighbor as yourself.

These 2 commandments actually sum up all of the Law and the Prophets.

They are a Readers Digest version of the Hebrew Scripture.

If you love God and neighbor you will fulfill the sum of the Law, not that this will save you because Christ did that on the cross, but this will show the world the love of God.

works

160713What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder. Do you want to be shown, you senseless person, that faith apart from works is barren? Was not our ancestor Abraham justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works. Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. Likewise, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another road? For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead. (James 2:14-26, NRSV)

I have to say as a Lutheran I have problems with this passage of scripture.

Because yes we are justified by faith. And faith alone saves us.

But I also remember that all of scripture is good for teaching and reproof. So there is something to this faith without works is dead.

You see as Lutherans we are quick to quote Ephesians 2:8-9:

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—  9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast.

We want to say we are saved by grace through faith, and it is not by anything that I have done so we can not boast about how good of a follower of Christ I am. It is all up to Christ.

But we stop at verse 9 and we can’t do that. You see verse 10 says:

10 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.

Yes we are saved by grace through faith, and it is all Christ’s doing, but He saved us, to do the works God prepared for us to do before we were saved! You see faith without works is dead.

We don’t do works to show God we are good enough, we do works to show the world how much God loves them.

So work for God, not for your salvation, but so that the world will see Him in you!

To you O Lord!

160712To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul.
O my God, in you I trust;
do not let me be put to shame;
do not let my enemies exult over me.
Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;
let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.
Make me to know your ways, O LORD;
teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth, and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all day long.
Be mindful of your mercy, O LORD, and of your steadfast love,
for they have been from of old.
Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
according to your steadfast love remember me,
for your goodness’ sake, O LORD!
Good and upright is the LORD;
therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
He leads the humble in what is right,
and teaches the humble his way.
All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness,
for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.
(Psalm 25:1-10, NRSV)

Every time I read this Psalm I think about being at camp and singing the song…

To You O Lord I lift up my soul
In You I trust O Lord

Higher than the mountains deeper than the sea is your love for me.

I get a good feeling because this psalm reminds me how much God loves me, and how deep I can rest in His arms.

We are loved by the creator of the universe.

Live in that Love!

turn to

160711and the LORD your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all your undertakings, in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the LORD will again take delight in prospering you, just as he delighted in prospering your ancestors, when you obey the LORD your God by observing his commandments and decrees that are written in this book of the law, because you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.  Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away. It is not in heaven, that you should say, “Who will go up to heaven for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?” Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, “Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?” No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe. (Deuteronomy 30:9-14, NRSV)

because you turn to the Lord your God and follow what has been decreed by God to follow.

It is not too hard to do, for it has been written on your heart.

The commandments to follow are in  your mouth and on your hearts.

So turn to God and follow where He leads!

who?

160710Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.” But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.’ Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:25-37, NRSV)

And wanting to justify his behavior…

Anytime you ask a question of God to make you feel like you are doing the right thing, you are going to be surprised.

Anytime we draw a line to keep a group of people out, Jesus will always be on the other side of the line from us.

You see Samaritans were the scum of the earth, and here is a Samaritan showing mercy.

So there is no one on earth who is not your neighbor!

Everyone should be treated with the love and grace that God has shown to you.

No one is beyond the love of God and no one, therefore, is beyond the boundaries of being our neighbor.

tread down

160709My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and make melody.
Awake, my soul!
Awake, O harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn.
I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples,
and I will sing praises to you among the nations.
For your steadfast love is higher than the heavens,
and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,
and let your glory be over all the earth.
Give victory with your right hand, and answer me,
so that those whom you love may be rescued.
God has promised in his sanctuary:
“With exultation I will divide up Shechem,
and portion out the Vale of Succoth.
Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;
Ephraim is my helmet;
Judah is my scepter.
Moab is my washbasin;
on Edom I hurl my shoe;
over Philistia I shout in triumph.”
Who will bring me to the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
Have you not rejected us, O God?
You do not go out, O God, with our armies.
O grant us help against the foe,
for human help is worthless.
With God we shall do valiantly;
it is he who will tread down our foes.
(Psalm 108, NRSV)

God will not let anyone triumph over us.

For a time it may seem like God has let them win, like God is nowhere to be found.

But God will triumph, and all of our foes will be tread down beneath God’s feet!

So sing to the Lord for He is good, and He will always be with you.

what would it take?

160708Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the ruler, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John also to assist them. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they met a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet, named Bar-Jesus. He was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God. But the magician Elymas (for that is the translation of his name) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul away from the faith. But Saul, also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord? And now listen—the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind for a while, unable to see the sun.” Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he went about groping for someone to lead him by the hand. When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord. (Acts 13:1-12, NRSV)

What would it take for you to believe the story of Jesus?

Would you believe if someone said someone in your presence would be unable to see and then they had to have someone lead them around because they couldn’t see?

I think it would either make me believe or scare me!

But even without seeing these things, we can believe that the promises Jesus has made to us are real and He will never let us down.

sounds

160707For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
For you shall go out in joy,
and be led back in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you
shall burst into song,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall be to the LORD for a memorial,
for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
(Isaiah 55:10-13, NRSV)

Rain and snow come down from above and do not return back up until they have watered the ground. Never does rain come down that it doesn’t water the earth. Now some may fall on roofs or concrete, roads, or other things that keep it from the ground, but it runs off of these into the ground.

This is the word of the Lord. It goes out and gives life to all that will receive it.

God’s will will be done, through us or in spite of us, and it will always be fruitful!

hearing

160706For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” But not all have obeyed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:13-17, NRSV)

How can we hear if no one proclaims?

And that is where we come in…

You see we have heard the story, and so we need to go and share the story. Jesus sent us, “Go therefore into all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teaching them everything I taught you…”

So you were sent to teach and preach about everything you have learned and heard about Jesus, so that those who have never heard can hear! So when they hear they can call on His name and receive His grace!

So go and tell the story so that all may hear about Jesus’ wondrous love!

abundent

160630That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea.  Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow.  And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up.  Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil.  But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away.  Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.  Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen!” “Hear then the parable of the sower.  When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path.  As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;  yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing.  But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.” (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23, NRSV)

Abundent is the crop from the seed that finds good soil.

You see there are so many things in our lives that keep us from thriving in the life God has for us.

What is keeping His word from being abundent in your life?

Work?

Family?

Worldly commitments?

God wants to be a part of your life, walking with you through everything you are going through.

He has gifted you to be an intrigal part of His plan in the world.

Allow His word to take root in your life. Cling to His life as your life, and allow Him to work in and through you.

Let your heart be good soil!
