See…

160925“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.  And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,  who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores.  The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony.  Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’  He said, ‘Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house— for I have five brothers—that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.’  Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’  He said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’  He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’” (Luke 16:19-31, NRSV)

So what do you see?

Or what do you not see?

Here we have a story of a man who had more than enough for himself, but he did not see those around him.

You see both the poor man, Lazarus, and the rich man die. One goes to be with Abraham, and the other to Hades.

So what did the rich man do to deserve Hades?

Did he inflict the sores on Lazarus?

Did he keep Lazarus at the gate?

It doesn’t say how he treated Lazarus, so we assume that he was indifferent to him. He probably didn’t even notice him at the gate.

And his five brothers, if they are as observant as this man, then they will not be seeing others around him.

But what do we see?

Skin color?

Sexual orientation?

Minorities?

Is someone convicted based on what they look like?

Do we see just what is on the surface, or do we look deeper?

What does Jesus want us to see?

Praise the Lord!

160924Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD; praise the name of the LORD. Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time on and forevermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the LORD is to be praised. The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens. Who is like the LORD our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the LORD! (Psalm 113, NRSV)

From the rising of the sun to its setting we should praise the Lord!

Why should we praise the Lord?

He raises the poor from the dust.

He lifts the needy from the ash heap

He makes the lowly sit with princes.

He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children.

He comes to the help of those in need.

That is why we praise the Lord because He is worthy to be praised!

you can’t take it with you

160923Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it; but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains. But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will bring about at the right time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life. (1 Timothy 6:6-19, NRSV)

You can’t take it with you when you go!

So do not store up treasures here, and if you are rich, be rich in  good works, generous and ready to share all you have.

For we are called to use what we have in service to others. To pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness.

So we will be found to be living through Christ.

So don’t worry about taking it with you, use what you have been blessed with to bless others.

Satisfaction

160922The lover of money will not be satisfied with money; nor the lover of wealth, with gain. This also is vanity. When goods increase, those who eat them increase; and what gain has their owner but to see them with his eyes? Sweet is the sleep of laborers, whether they eat little or much; but the surfeit of the rich will not let them sleep. (Ecclesiastes 5:10-12, NRSV)

Where do you look for satisfaction?

Is it from your money?

The things you own?

The things you have around?

None of these will ever be enough to satisfy you. These things will raise what you need and will not bring satisfaction.

Unless you rest in the Lord and let Him be your satisfaction you will never be satisfied.

Where is your satisfaction?

where is your trust

160921For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall never be shaken. How long will you assail a person, will you batter your victim, all of you, as you would a leaning wall, a tottering fence?  Their only plan is to bring down a person of prominence. They take pleasure in falsehood; they bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse.  For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him.  He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.  On God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.  Those of low estate are but a breath, those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath.  Put no confidence in extortion, and set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them. Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God,  and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord. For you repay to all according to their work. (Psalm 62, NRSV)

It is not always easy to trust in other people. Sometimes trust takes years to build and seconds to destroy. But honestly look at your life and see where is your trust.

Who or what do you trust?

What do you rely on for your life?

If you’ve never had to worry about how a bill was going to be paid, or how a need was going to be met, you may rely or trust in your own abilities to make sure life goes smoothly. You could also say the same if you have overcome great obstacles to pay a bill or meet a need. You can rely on yourself to buckle down and get the job done.

But really where is the trust?

For me, it is in God. God is the rock that keeps me moving forward.

My trust is in God, because I know that God will never leave me nor forsake me. I will be safe in His hands, not that there will be no trouble in my life, but God will always be there to walk with me through it.

So where is your trust?

I have done all these…

160920Then someone came to him and said, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and mother; also, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “I have kept all these; what do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, “Then who can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” Then Peter said in reply, “Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man is seated on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. (Matthew 19:16-30, NRSV)

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven…

Some say this is a gate that had a camel had to be unencumbered and then lower to its knees and crawl through. This, however, has not been proven.

The interesting thing this read of the passage is, the rich young man said he kept all the commandments Jesus brought up to him. This of course after he asked which ones. It is like he knew the ones he had broken, but thankfully the ones Jesus mentioned he was good on and therefore he would be fine getting into heaven.

I think the commandments are Jesus way of helping us live the way He came to show us to live. Yes, I know that approaches on the third use of the Law, to make us righteous, but if we are worried about living the right way, we will be doing what God is leading us to do. It is when we think we have kept the laws, that Jesus ups the ante and shows us that we don’t get it, and only by truly following Him will we make it.

Commend or hold down?

160919As he taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”  He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:38-44, NRSV)

Beware of men in long flowing robes who want the best seats.

Who devour widows’ houses and say things so people notice them.

For they have their reward. Whoever seeks to do things to gain from them, has already received their reward.

And as Jesus watched people put their offerings in the collection plate, he noticed a woman and told the disciples about her.

Now this passage is used as a Stewardship passage to give everything we have. And yes it just might mean that, but given the verses before I think it might mean something different. You see Jesus just said that there are people who devour widows’ houses, and he specifically said they were scribes, those who know the law. Those who wrote commentary on the law and gave rules for the communities to follow. They would have set the bar for giving. And this woman through those rules was forced to give all she had. She did not give her last 2 coins because she was moved to give it all to God, but was forced by a system that devours widows’ houses.

The religious system of the time worked to keep her in her place when it should have been working to lift her up and free her to be a servant of the living God.

So how does our religious system keep people down?

How can we better lift people up to be servants of the living God?

Really, Jesus?!?!

160918Then Jesus said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.’ Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.’ So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ He answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’ Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’ And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes. “Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” (Luke 16:1-13, NRSV)

My first thought as I read this passage is, “Really, Jesus?!”

If you are not faithful with dishonest wealth then you can not be trusted with true riches.

Make friends for yourself however possible.

Ok but here are the real issues here. In and Honor and shame society, the people the dishonest manager was “helping” would have seen that he can not be trusted and therefore would not be wanting him as a friend. Even if they did “owe” him something because of the cutting of their debt, they would not want to pay him back.

And the manager is commended by the owner because of his shrewdness, but if you are unfaithful, well then yo can’t be trusted.

Be shrewd but faithful…

So again I say, “Really, Jesus?!?!?”

But then I thought of Robin Hood. Right the hero of the poor, but also a thief. He took from the rich and gave to the poor. Well he reappropriated what was the poor’s in the first place and gave it back. But does that make it right?

So what I get from this parable which I do not understand is, we need to live in the world and serve God in everything we do. If we are looking out for ourselves, then we will not be serving God but our own interests, and that will not get us anywhere. But if we can be in the world and use everything at our disposal to serve God, that will take us everywhere!

revive

160917LORD, you were favorable to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. You forgave the iniquity of your people; you pardoned all their sin. You withdrew all your wrath; you turned from your hot anger. Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us. Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger to all generations? Will you not revive us again, so that your people may rejoice in you? Show us your steadfast love, O LORD, and grant us your salvation. Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts. Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other. Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky. The LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness will go before him, and will make a path for his steps. (Psalm 85, NRSV)

Revive us o Lord as you have before.

Do not always be angry with us, but restore us to you and help us to stay fast with you.

Make a path before us that we can follow and help us to stay with you!

You have been faithful to revive and restore us, please Lord revive us again!
