for this is…

170222“Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye. “Do not give what is holy to dogs; and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you. “Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:1-12, NRSV)

Judging, logs, specks what does it all mean?

We often hear people say that the Bible says “Do not judge.” Well it does but there is not a period after judge there is a comma, and it continues that you will be judged with the judgment you give. Not do not judge, but do not judge unless you are willing to be judged also.

And don’t look at the wrongs with your neighbor until you have taken care of your own issues.

Because we all want everyone to follow the golden rule. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

But what caught my attention this reading was the very last phrase, for this is the law and the prophets. To Jesus, who is the one who said this, the law and the prophets is short hand for the sum total of the Hebrew Scriptures. So all of the Hebrew Scriptures is pointing us to treat others as we want to be treated. So treat others with love, because that is what God did for you.

foundation

170221According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—the work of each builder will become visible, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each has done. If what has been built on the foundation survives, the builder will receive a reward.  If the work is burned up, the builder will suffer loss; the builder will be saved, but only as through fire.  Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. Do not deceive yourselves. If you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” So let no one boast about human leaders. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all belong to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. (1 Corinthians 3:10-23, NRSV)

Everyone who adds to the church builds on what those before have built, but all of it is built on the foundation laid in Jesus Christ.

And anyone who tries to destroy the church, God will destroy that person.

We all belong to Christ and Christ belongs to God, and what we build should be built for God.

So add to the church, by living on the foundation of Jesus.

how to live

170220The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. You shall each revere your mother and father, and you shall keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. Do not turn to idols or make cast images for yourselves: I am the LORD your God. When you offer a sacrifice of well-being to the LORD, offer it in such a way that it is acceptable on your behalf. It shall be eaten on the same day you offer it, or on the next day; and anything left over until the third day shall be consumed in fire. If it is eaten at all on the third day, it is an abomination; it will not be acceptable. All who eat it shall be subject to punishment, because they have profaned what is holy to the LORD; and any such person shall be cut off from the people. When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the LORD your God. You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God: I am the LORD. You shall not defraud your neighbor; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a laborer until morning. You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the LORD. You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor: I am the LORD. You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD. (Leviticus 19:1-18, NRSV)

How are we to live:

Honor mother and father.

Do not make idols.

Make acceptable sacrifices, and eat them in the right amount of time.

Reap your harvest but leave some for gleaning.

Do not steal.

Do not deal falsely.

Do not lie.

Do not swear falsely.

Do not profane the name of the Lord.

Do not defraud your neighbor.

Do not steal.

Pay people when they work.

Do not make fun of the deaf.

Do not cause the blind to stumble.

Fear God and follow where He leads you.

Pretty simple, right?

what is your reward?

170219“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:38-48, NRSV)

This is a loaded text with a lot we do not see on the surface.

Jesus continues His teaching in the Sermon on the Mount telling His disciples to look out for the least of these.

You have heard it said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” We hear this and think justice, an eye for an eye. And that is why it was written in the Old Testament, for justice, so if I took your eye you could not seek more than that. It was for equal response to what was done. But Jesus said not to seek an eye for an eye, but if someone strike you on the right cheek, turn the left. This may sound like Jesus is saying be a door mat and let people abuse you and walk all over you. But my understanding of this verse is not that. When someone in Jesus day would strike someone of a lower status they would hit them on the left cheek with the inside of their right hand, and when you turn the other cheek, that would be the right check, in order for that person to strike you again they would use the back of their right hand (no one would strike with their left hand, just didn’t happen) and that signified that you are of equal status. So it is not saying be a door mat, it is saying in the eyes of God we are equal.

And go the extra mile, every person was required by Roman Law to carry the bag of a Roman soldier 1 mile. So if requested to carry, do not do the minimum, but go twice as far.

And it is easy for us to love those who love us because everyone does that, but Jesus calls us to be better than, or more Godly than the rest. So we need to love those who hate us, and we need to greet everyone. Because if we do what everyone does, what is our reward? But if we love everyone, we will show everyone the love of God, and that is the best reward there is.

Happy

170218Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD.  Happy are those who keep his decrees, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways. You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. O that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous ordinances. I will observe your statutes; do not utterly forsake me. (Psalm 119:1-8, NRSV)

Happy are they who walk in the law of the Lord.

Happy are they who keep His decrees, who seek Him with their whole heart.

Happy are they who fulfill the law of the Lord.

Fixing their eyes upon God and following where He leads them.

Those with an upright heart who seek after the Lord and follow where He leads.

So be happy, follow the Lord.

ASAP

170217Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest. My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and is brought back by another, you should know that whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save the sinner’s soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. (James 5:12-20, NRSV)

Is anyone sick?

Or hurting?

Is anyone happy?

or cheerful?

Is anyone suffering?

Then you should pray.

In everything be in prayer to God, for we have the example of Elijah who was in pray constantly and his pray was answered. God hears us when we pray and the prayers of the faithful will cover a multitude of things.

Remember ASAP – Always Say A Prayer!

choose life

170216See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. (Deuteronomy 30:15-20, NRSV)

Do we have to do anything to get the grace of God, no we do not. God’s grace is freely given.

However, we can choose to live in grace or not.

So we can choose life or choose death. We can choose to allow the grace of God to flow over and through our life.

And life we choose is not something we are waiting for or will come after this earthly life is over. It is a life that starts right here and now.

Life in God does not mean smooth sailing or not problems, but life in God is better than death and living without Him.

growth

170215And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? For when one says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each. For we are God’s servants, working together; you are God’s field, God’s building. (1 Corinthians 3:1-9, NRSV)

Paul fed the Corinthians with milk and not solid food because they weren’t ready for that yet. We need to ease into things.

That is why God leaves nothing up to us.

You see even Paul, Apollos, and the rest of the apostles didn’t have control.

One planted, another watered, another fertilized, but God brought the growth.

And that is who all of it is up to, God. We can not make someone grow in faith, we can nurture and instruct and walk along with, but it is God that brings the growth and maturity.

So allow God to work through you and use you to fertilize what others have planted and watered.

Communicate

170214“If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” (Matthew 18:15-20, NRSV)

If someone has sinned against you, go and speak with them.

That is the problem with the world today, we get made when someone has done something and expect them to just know it and to admit to it. And it may be that they know what they have done, but maybe the do not. Every week in the Lutheran church I serve we confess our sins and usually something is included in that confession that goes something like this, “Forgive us for the things we did not know we did.”

We need to communicate, and that is what this passage is about.

Talking to others. In good times and in bad. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and the church is only as strong as its weakest relationship. We need to keep communication open not only with God but with all of the members of the body.

So if someone has wronged you, then go and talk with them.

Remember what your momma said

170213Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. Do not speak evil against one another, brothers and sisters. Whoever speaks evil against another or judges another, speaks evil against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save and to destroy. So who, then, are you to judge your neighbor? (James 4:7-12, NRSV)

I read this passage and what immediately came to mind was the phrase, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”

Because James says to not speak evil against each other. To draw near to God and to not be judged or evil.

And that is what our moms meant by “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”

So remember what your momma said…
