The Son of Man

30Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see ‘the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven’ with power and great glory. 31And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 32“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 34Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. (Matthew 24:30-35, NRSV)

Look for these signs, when the fig tree puts forth its leaves you know summer is near, and so we can learn to determine the signs of when Jesus is near.

But what is meant by this generation will not pass away until all of these things have taken place? I am pretty sure there have been many generations since Jesus said this. According to the International Society of Genetic Genealogy a generation is 25 years from the time the parents have a child, it could be 20 but varies by set of individual parents. So if Jesus said this in the year 30 then there are between 79.56 and 99.45 generations since he said this…

So what does Jesus mean this generation?

Here is again something we can not explain but have to wait to get an answer, it is called faith. Jesus means that nothing will change until the fulfillment of God’s plan. And we can see the signs.

Let us always look to him and follow where he leads.
