21From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.22And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.” 23But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” (Matthew 16:21-23, NRSV)
How many times have we been like Peter, one minute saying Jesus is the Son of the Living God and the next minute telling Jesus that His plan is not going to work.
Right, that is what Peter does here. Yesterday’s reading, the verses right before today’s reading, had Peter proclaiming Jesus as the SOn of the Living God, the Messiah! and now he is telling Jesus he can not go to Jerusalem and die, Peter will not allow it.
So Jesus reminds Peter of his proper place, which is behind Jesus, following where he leads. And that is our proper place.
Can you see the back of Jesus’ head, if not maybe you should relocate.
Remember to follow and not try to lead, because God’s way is always the best way, even when we don’t understand it.
