temptation

My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you. But ask in faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind; for the doubter, being double-minded and unstable in every way, must not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Let the believer who is lowly boast in being raised up, and the rich in being brought low, because the rich will disappear like a flower in the field. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the field; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. It is the same way with the rich; in the midst of a busy life, they will wither away. Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. No one, when tempted, should say, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil and he himself tempts no one. But one is tempted by one’s own desire, being lured and enticed by it; then, when that desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and that sin, when it is fully grown, gives birth to death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved. Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures. (James 1602181:2-18, NRSV)

Consider it joy when you face a trial!

I always thought that was a little peculiar. I’m supposed to be happy when I am facing a trial or temptation…

Because when we walk through temptation with the faith and power given to us by God, we will come out the other side stronger.

We should not ask to be tempted, or say that God is tempting us, but ask for faith and wisdom to make the decisions that will keep us on the path God has set before us.

God has a plan for your life and so does the devil, which will you walk on, who will you follow.

Ask for wisdom and faith and follow after God.

only way?

160217He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. When he reached the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not come into the time of trial.” Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done.” [Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.] When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.” (Luke 22:39-46, NRSV)

Have you ever been told you shouldn’t question God?

Can we ask God why?

Can we ask God to change the plans?

Yes! It is ok to question God, to ask for something different.

That is what happened here in this reading. Jesus went into the garden and asked God to remove the cup from Him if it was possible. Jesus was headed to the cross and He knew it. And He wanted to make sure this was the only way.

God is open to our suggestion. In chapter 18 of Genesis we see Abraham pleading with God over Sodom and Gomorrah. And God gives in, to a point. And Jesus says, “Remove this cup from me, if you are willing, but not my will but yours be done.” And that is the key. We can ask God for anything, but they only way is God’s will.

Is what you are asking God’s will? Can we be like Jesus in the garden and make our request, but follow through on what the will of God is?

tested

160216I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not become idolaters as some of them did; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play.” We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents. And do not complain as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down to instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come. So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall. No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:1-13, NRSV)

Do not fall away from the teachings you have been taught, from the way you were walking.

Do not do the things you know will lead you away from the abundant life given to you in Christ.

Do not put Christ to the test by putting yourself in a place where you will be tested and might fall away, thus making Him have to rescue you. Is not His death for your life enough?

And God will not test you beyond what He knows you can withstand, but through testing we are made stronger in faith and connection with Him.

Hold tight to your faith and know that God is holding tight to you!

everyone

160215But what does it say? “The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:8-13, NRSV)

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved!

With the heart, we believe and are justified and we are saved by saying we believe on our lips.

No one is greater than another, the love of God is for everyone!

So believe and confess and know you are saved!

if you are

160214Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’” Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, “To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’” Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. (Luke 4:1-13, NRSV)

Is Satan really asking Jesus if he is the son of God? Does Satan not know?

No Satan is not questioning Jesus’ identity. He knows full and well that this is God. And he knows that Jesus’ hunger can be dealt with easily as He can change stones to bread.

And when Jesus will not bow to Satan’s pleas or offers, Satan quotes scripture to Jesus to show Him it is ok for Him to give in. Tricky isn’t he?

You see the devil does not question God’s identity but do we?

Are our hearts in tune with Jesus identity to know when He is leading us? Do we question His identity?

What are we willing to give up to follow after Him? What is keeping us from knowing His identity?
