sounds

160707For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
For you shall go out in joy,
and be led back in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you
shall burst into song,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall be to the LORD for a memorial,
for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
(Isaiah 55:10-13, NRSV)

Rain and snow come down from above and do not return back up until they have watered the ground. Never does rain come down that it doesn’t water the earth. Now some may fall on roofs or concrete, roads, or other things that keep it from the ground, but it runs off of these into the ground.

This is the word of the Lord. It goes out and gives life to all that will receive it.

God’s will will be done, through us or in spite of us, and it will always be fruitful!

hearing

160706For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” But not all have obeyed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:13-17, NRSV)

How can we hear if no one proclaims?

And that is where we come in…

You see we have heard the story, and so we need to go and share the story. Jesus sent us, “Go therefore into all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teaching them everything I taught you…”

So you were sent to teach and preach about everything you have learned and heard about Jesus, so that those who have never heard can hear! So when they hear they can call on His name and receive His grace!

So go and tell the story so that all may hear about Jesus’ wondrous love!

abundent

160630That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea.  Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow.  And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up.  Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil.  But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away.  Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.  Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen!” “Hear then the parable of the sower.  When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path.  As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;  yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing.  But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.” (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23, NRSV)

Abundent is the crop from the seed that finds good soil.

You see there are so many things in our lives that keep us from thriving in the life God has for us.

What is keeping His word from being abundent in your life?

Work?

Family?

Worldly commitments?

God wants to be a part of your life, walking with you through everything you are going through.

He has gifted you to be an intrigal part of His plan in the world.

Allow His word to take root in your life. Cling to His life as your life, and allow Him to work in and through you.

Let your heart be good soil!

a little help from my friends…

160704My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor’s work, will become a cause for pride. For all must carry their own loads. Those who are taught the word must share in all good things with their teacher Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest-time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith. See what large letters I make when I am writing in my own hand! It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that try to compel you to be circumcised—only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Even the circumcised do not themselves obey the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule—peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. (Galatians 6:1-16, NRSV)

Judge your own works, not those of your neighbors, but reprove those detected in transgressions with a spirit of gentleness.

But help one another to stay in the light and to live the lives God has called us to.

Do not grow weary in doing what is right, but lean on your brothers and sisters and look to them for help.

Bearing each others burdens to show forth Christ’s love for all the world.

So get by with a little help from your friends, and know they are doing the same with you.

written

160703After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’ And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.’ I tell you, on that day it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that town. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.But at the judgment it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades. “Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!” He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:1-20, NRSV)

The reading for today is supposed to be Luke 10:1-11, 16-20, it leaves out all the woes, but I think they should be in there.

So we have Jesus sending out the seventy to go ahead of Him where He is planning on going to prepare the way. This is a real John the Baptist moment, remember, “The voice of one calling in the wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.”

But they go out and when they come back they are pumped because the demons listened to them through the name of Jesus! You can see why they are excited. But Jesus reminds them where their focus should be.

Do not put your faith in the power you have because of me, but in the fact your name is written in heaven.

The power will fade, or fail you, but what will never change is your name written in the book of life. That is where your trust should be.

flourish

160702It is good to give thanks to the LORD,
to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
and your faithfulness by night,
to the music of the lute and the harp,
to the melody of the lyre.
For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work;
at the works of your hands I sing for joy.
How great are your works, O LORD!
Your thoughts are very deep!
The dullard cannot know,
the stupid cannot understand this:
though the wicked sprout like grass
and all evildoers flourish,
they are doomed to destruction forever,
but you, O LORD, are on high forever.
For your enemies, O LORD,
for your enemies shall perish;
all evildoers shall be scattered.
But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox;
you have poured over me fresh oil.
My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies;
my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants.
The righteous flourish like the palm tree,
and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
They are planted in the house of the LORD;
they flourish in the courts of our God.
In old age they still produce fruit;
they are always green and full of sap,
showing that the LORD is upright;
he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
(Psalm 92, NRSV)

and all evildoers flourish, but even so they are doomed to destruction forever because the works of your hand O Lord are marvelous.

Because only those who really flourish are those who stay in your courts, who live in ways and walk in your light.

Help me to walk in your light O Lord and to flourish in the life you have given me!

Because God created us for more than surviving, God made us to thrive in His light!

light fruit

160701Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But fornication and impurity of any kind, or greed, must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among saints. Entirely out of place is obscene, silly, and vulgar talk; but instead, let there be thanksgiving. Be sure of this, that no fornicator or impure person, or one who is greedy (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be associated with them. For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light—for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. (Ephesians 5:1-9, NRSV)

Now we walk in light! And as those who walk in the light we need to let the light shine!

So let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and give glory to our Father in Heaven.

Let His light shine through you so that there is no darkness found in you, allow Him to work all the darkness out so that others see God through your life.

And be filled with the light so you are a light fruit!

Worship Weakly

160701-NLTherefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:19-25, NRSV)

In May, we started our journey looking at the Marks of Discipleship through the book Power Surge by Michael Foss.

This month we get to worship weakly, or is that worship weekly?

I have seen several signs that say Seven days without Prayer make one weak, which is true, as we looked at in June, you can not keep a relationship going without conversation and that is what prayer is. And yes it is true we can have prayer with God anywhere and anytime, as we should because Paul told us to pray without ceasing.

But it is more than conversation with God. It is mutual care and conversation with all of the saints. Hebrews 10:25 says, “not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Martin Luther said we need to gather together for the mutual care and conversation with the saints.

You see we do not gather just so we can commune with God and worship God, we gather together for the edification of others, and for mutual care and conversation with the body of Christ.

Seven days without God makes one weak, and in this world that battles against us, we need all the help we can get. And we need to gather with those who are a part of the body, as they may need us. Gathering for worship may not be for your edification, but you may be the smile that someone else needs to see, or you may have the word they need to hear.

So with confidence in the promises we have received through Jesus, let us gather together for care and conversation, for communion with God and the Body of Christ. Do not be weak, but worship weekly!

good soil

160630That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen!”  (Matthew 13:1-9, NRSV)

Jesus spoke to the people of the day in parables, stories about things they understood.

Seed scattered has to have good soil to produce a good crop. If it lands on soil not so good, it might spring up, but then die.

How is your heart?

How is your life?

Are you good soil for His word to grow in?

Doctor Doctor

160629After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up, left everything, and followed him.  Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house; and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others sitting at the table with them. The Pharisees and their scribes were complaining to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” Jesus answered, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:27-32, NRSV)

When do you go to the doctor?

If you’re like me you try not to go at all. My father only went to the doctor when he was dying…

We go to the doctor when we are sick. And those who are not sick usually don’t go to the doctor. Now we do have preventative care and so you might go for a physical or a check up for medicine when you are not sick. But we normally only seek out medical services when we are sick.

And Jesus comes to us to show us there is a better way to live. Not for those already living the life God has for them, but everyone else.

Jesus came to help all repent, turn around and live the life God has for them. Let us go and show everyone the love He has for us and them.
