Braveheart

161030Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:31-36, NRSV)

What does it mean to be free?

Or maybe a better question is are you really free?

You see the Jews answered Jesus, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?”

Had they forgotten that they are descendants of those who made their way out of Eygpt after being set free from Pharaoh?

Did they not see the oppression of Rome all around them now?

We do not always see the things that hold us down.

We are not truly free unless we have a place in the home.

So what is it that enslaves us?

Money?

Power?

As I read this passage this time I thought about the movie Braveheart and the ending scene, you can see it below. William Wallace says “Freedom!” Becuase he is free from everything that has held him captive. He is letting go of everything and allowing life to happen.

How often do we allow ourselves to not live the life God has called us into? God did not give us a spirit of fear but has set us free to live the life He has placed in front of us.

So bravely go into the world and follow where He leads you.

And grasp the Freedom that God gives each of us.

What do you seek?

161029Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father—the one in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. (Matthew 23:1-12, NRSV)

Do you do what you do so people see you?

Do you want the acclamations?

Do you want the praise?

Do you want to be seen for what you have done?

Jesus told those gathered, “don’t seek to be called rabbi, because you are all students of the one teacher. And there is only one Father, in heaven, and I am your only instructor. You must serve all, and not seek the glory that comes from the job you do.”

For grace and love come from God, not from doing things for others.

Doing things for others is the joy of being loved by a merciful God.

So do you want the glory or the grace?

life

161028When you cry out, let your collection of idols deliver you! The wind will carry them off, a breath will take them away. But whoever takes refuge in me shall possess the land and inherit my holy mountain. It shall be said, “Build up, build up, prepare the way, remove every obstruction from my people’s way.” For thus says the high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with those who are contrite and humble in spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite. For I will not continually accuse, nor will I always be angry; for then the spirits would grow faint before me, even the souls that I have made. Because of their wicked covetousness I was angry; I struck them, I hid and was angry; but they kept turning back to their own ways. I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will lead them and repay them with comfort, creating for their mourners the fruit of the lips. Peace, peace, to the far and the near, says the LORD; and I will heal them. (Isaiah 57:13-19, NRSV)

Take refuge in the Lord, for He will not continually accuse, nor will He always be angry.

He loves us and wants the best for us, like any parent, who is upset when a child does something against their will, but love never fades.

The Lord will heal us and give us life.

Take you shelter in the Lord and find life!

lift you up

161027But he gives all the more grace; therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. (James 6:4-10, NRSV)

It seems like there are so many things we can dwell on that just pull us down and push us down and try to make us feel like there is no hope.

But there is always hope. No matter where you’ve gone, or what you’ve done.

God is always there to pull you up, to raise you up.

When yo focus on Him and hand everything over to Him, He will raise you up and will cleanse you of everything you have done.

He will lift you out of the muck and exalt you.

So give it all to Him.

Let’s hang…

161026“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one. (Matthew 6:5-13, NRSV)

What is pray?

This seems to be a subject we all get hung up on. We make it out to be the stringing together of the right words at the right time so that everything will be made right in the world.

Each week most of us who attend worship recite the Lord’s Prayer, and why?

Here in Matthew it says Jesus said, “Pray then in this way:” Notice He did not say, “pray these words.”

Just don’t heap up empty phrases, and big words. Don’t make yourself look better than you are or try to make it look like you know all the right things to say.

Prayer is about hanging out with Jesus. Prayer is about a conversation you have with God. Nothing more.

So hang with Jesus, and talk about what’s happening in your world, and what you can do for Him.

Keep the faith

161025As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:6-8, NRSV)

There are no more important words in a person’s life than, “I’ve kept the faith.”

Is it easy?

No it is not.

Will it pay off?

More than you know.

No matter what happens, keep your faith in God. God will never let you down!

Do you?

161024How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts! My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God. Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise. Happy are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion. As they go through the valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with pools. They go from strength to strength; the God of gods will be seen in Zion. (Psalm 84:1-7, NRSV)

My soul longs and indeed it faints for the courts of the Lord!

My heart and flesh sing for Joy to the Living God!

Is this how you feel about God?

Is this what brings you joy and makes your heart leap, the blessings of God and being able to worship Him?

God has done great things for all of us, and what do we do in return?

Worship Him, let your soul faint for Him.

I I I

161023He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 18:9-14, NRSV)

Who are you, the pharisee or the tax collector?

We all hope to be the tax collector, but are we the pharisee?

Here is what I see, or hear, when I read this passage.

The pharisee prays, I…., I…., I…. Everything the pharisee says is about me and what I have done, the reason I am better than others.

The tax collector admits he is unworthy of God and asks for mercy.

Are we self-confident?

Or do we see our faults and lay them at the cross?

And do we think more highly of ourselves, and look down on others?

Or do we lift them up and pray that God not only have mercy on us, but on all?

Persistence

161022They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.” So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. (Mark 10:46-52, NRSV)

This man knew Jesus could give him his sight.

And so he shouted for Jesus to heal him.

He shouted for Jesus to have mercy on him.

Even when others told him to stop or be quiet, he continued. He got louder.

He knew Jesus could and would heal him.

He persisted until he could see.

Be persistent, and call on God to help you.

Bargaining with God…

161021Then the men set out from there, and they looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to set them on their way. The LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, seeing that Abraham shall become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? No, for I have chosen him, that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice; so that the LORD may bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.” Then the LORD said, “How great is the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and how very grave their sin! I must go down and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me; and if not, I will know.” So the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, while Abraham remained standing before the LORD. Then Abraham came near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will you then sweep away the place and not forgive it for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” And the LORD said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will forgive the whole place for their sake.” Abraham answered, “Let me take it upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” Again he spoke to him, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” Then he said, “Oh do not let the Lord be angry if I speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.” He said, “Let me take it upon myself to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.” Then he said, “Oh do not let the Lord be angry if I speak just once more. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place. (Genesis 18:16-33, NRSV)

Would you do this?

Bargain with God?

God is going to destroy Sodom and Abraham says, if you find 50 righteous there, will you still destroy it?

And God says, ok for 50 righteous I won’t destroy it.

What about 45?

and Abraham whittles his way down to 10 righteous and God relents for 10…

But don’t we really all do this, bargain with God. If you do this for me, then I’ll start going to worship more regularly.

My thought on this is bargain with God, He can handle it!
