a time

161107For everything there is a season, and
a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to throw away stones, and
a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.
(Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, NRSV)

Time seems to be something we can never get enough of.

It always seems to get away from us.

But this set of verses tells us that everything that happens happens for a reason.

We may not understand that reason or even know that reason. But there is a time for everything.

And to me this is comforting, because it is a time, not all time.

God walks with us through everything, the good, the bad, and He leads us to His life for us.

Remember it is a time…

Blessed Woe

161106Then he looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. “Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. “Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. “Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. “But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you. (Luke 6:20-31, NRSV)

Blessed are you when you are hungry…

Blessed are you when you weep…

Blessed are you when people hate you…

Are these really times when you feel blessed?

But wait, you are saying, you forgot the “for you will be…” part. You are correct. Jesus is not saying you are blessed when weeping, hungry, or hated, but you are blessed because of what these will lead too.

And woe to you if you do not see your need for others. Because we are all in this together and we need each other.

You see we are not self-made and we are children of the same heavenly father.

So live in the blessed woe and when you see a brother or sister in need help them because God has blessed you to be a blessing. And that is where the blessing truly lies in seeing we can not make it on our own.

God is…

161105God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Come, behold the works of the LORD; see what desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.” The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. (Psalm 46, NRSV)

God is your shelter.

God is your shield.

God is your refuge.

God is your strength.

God is your God.

So stop all of the commotion of life, and the hecticness, and rest in Him.

Be still and know that God is everything you need.

God is everything you need!

Know the Lord

161104The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the LORD,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. (Jeremiah 31:31-34, NRSV)

No longer will we say to each other, “Know the Lord.” For they shall know the Lord.

We will not teach them about the commandments because they will be written on their hearts!

So why do we still teach about God?

He made the new covenant, are we just slow to understanding?

Do we really not get it?

I know I have a hard time accepting that I have been forgiven. And that God will not remember my sin. Given we remember the things other have done to us and can’t seem to let them go, how can God do that?

How can He love me that much that He would forgive and forget? But He does!

That is the promise! Know the Lord and He will wipe away your sins, and forget them. And love you as His creation!

So Know the Lord.

all in all

161103Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. But now you must get rid of all such things—anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all!  As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:5-17, NRSV)

No matter what you were, once you have been brought into the body, you are one in the same with all other members of the body. And thus we should work together in harmony.

We need to have compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience with all. And bear each other in love, because in Christ we are made one.

Christ is all in all and all of us are one in Him.

please whom?

161102We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Each of us must please our neighbor for the good purpose of building up the neighbor. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. (Romans 15:1-7, NRSV)

We need to uphold the weak and look over their shortcomings.

And the things we do, we do them to please God and not ourselves.

We please God and our neighbors to build them up, for this is what Christ did for you. We do what we do to bring glory to God.

So please God and all will be given back to you!

Not ashamed

161101First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed throughout the world. For God, whom I serve with my spirit by announcing the gospel of his Son, is my witness that without ceasing I remember you always in my prayers, asking that by God’s will I may somehow at last succeed in coming to you. For I am longing to see you so that I may share with you some spiritual gift to strengthen you—or rather so that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine. I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as I have among the rest of the Gentiles. I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish—hence my eagerness to proclaim the gospel to you also who are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, “The one who is righteous will live by faith.” (Romans 1:8-17, NRSV)

I am not ashamed of the gospel, the good news that saved me. It is the power of God to bring me to a life with Him eternally.

It is the power that gave me a life that I can not obtain on my own.

Are you ashamed?

Give

The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:6-8, NRSV)

In May, we started our journey of learning more about becoming disciples through the 6 marks of discipleship in Power Surge by Michael Foss

This month is about Giving. All of us have been blessed beyond measure. Not financially, but giving is not just about money. When we hear giving in the church we automatically hide our wallets and think the pastor is going to ask for more money. But that is not what giving and/or stewardship is really all about.

We give of ourselves, our time and our possessions.

We give of ourselves when we do things for others that we can do, but they may not be able to do on their own. We use the talents we have been given to build up the lives of others. We give of our talents to do things for others to feed them, or help them learn, or do something for them that they would not or could not otherwise do or get done.

We give of our time, by giving of ourselves, and by being there to do things. Some of us volunteer at schools to be a classroom helper, or set up special activities for the kids, or to do things for the teachers. This takes time. Time is a precious commodity to all of us, as we all know there never seems to be enough of it. Giving your time to someone is a huge gift!

We give of our possessions by letting others use our things, or giving money to places. We give of our treasure and by doing that we are even more richly rewarded.

“The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving.”— Albert Einstein

So give of yourself, your time and your treasure, and allow God to abundantly bless you as you bless others.

ways

161031Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the LORD, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:6-11, NRSV)

My ways are not your ways, says the Lord!

Whose path are you following your way or God’s way?

God’s will will be done through us or in spite of us.

Which way is easier?  That is hard to say…

Which way will be best? God’s way, not easier or always fun, but the best way and thought to take!
