All are welcome…

170111Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it.” So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.” The eunuch asked Philip, “About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. (Acts 8:26-40, NRSV)

Baptism is a gift of God and is for everyone.

This eunuch was not a Jew, but was a Gentile.

But that does not keep him from being baptized and accepted as a child of God.

This gift is for all, and comes to us through others and the word of God.

So study the word and help others know how much God loves them.

why

170110But I had concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. I will sanctify my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD, says the Lord GOD, when through you I display my holiness before their eyes. I will take you from the nations, and gather you from all the countries, and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you, and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances. Then you shall live in the land that I gave to your ancestors; and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. (Ezekiel 36:21-28, NRSV)

Why does God do what God does?

Because we do things that make Him look bad. We defame His name. We profane His name.

So He has to do what He has to to make His name be how it should be, revered, honored, hallowed.

And in doing that, He gives us a new heart and a new spirit so we will follow after Him.

He cleans us and helps us to listen and follow where He leads, why because God is higher than us and loves us even when we profane His holy name.

Worship and doubt

170109Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:16-20, NRSV)

Is it possible to doubt and worship at the same time?

Verse 17 says “When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.” Funny thing is the word for some is not in the original Greek. But some scholars say because of the construction of the sentence it is implied. But in all other instances of this in extra-biblical writing, as this construction is not found anywhere else in the bible, the some is never added. So the disciples gathered on the mountain, and they saw Jesus and the worshiped and they doubted what they saw.

But this should not be a problem for us. Because they were still worshipping even though they were wondering how what they were seeing could possibly be. So next time you wonder or question, don’t worry, just hold on to faith, and hope and keep on worshipping!

to fulfill all righteousness

170108Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:13-17, NRSV)

John wanted Jesus to baptize him, I mean after all John’s baptism is a baptism of repentance, of confessing our sins. Does Jesus really need to confess sins? Does Jesus really need to be baptized?

But it is proper to do this to fulfill all righteousness! What does that mean? To fulfill all righteousness. To make all divine sinless things come to be.

Jesus did not need to confess sins or be made clean. But in order for the divine plan to proceed forward this was a step that needed to be done. Doesn’t mean we need to understand it. We just need to know that Jesus is God’s beloved son and through Him we can have a relationship with God.

Praise the Lord!

The words PRAISE THE LORD written in vintage letterpress type

Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host! Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and they were created. He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed. Praise the LORD from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command! Mountains and all hills, fruit trees, and all cedars! Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds! Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! Young men and women alike, old and young together! Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven. He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his faithful, for the people of Israel who are close to him. Praise the LORD! (Psalm 148, NRSV)

If you ever needed to know why you should praise the Lord, Psalm 148 gives you the reasons…

But what are your reasons?

Why do you praise the Lord?

I praise Him for my life.

I praise Him for my wife.

I praise him for my children.

I praise Him for my pets.

I praise Him for the shelter He has given me.

I praise Him for the people He has surrounded me with.

Why do you praise the Lord?

Wise men…

170106In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’” Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. (Matthew 2:1-12, NRSV)

The wise men saw the star and came to visit Jesus.

Were they there when Jesus was born?

How many were there? Well there was more than 1. As the text says wise men, but more than 1 is 2 or more.

Why then do we say there were 3? Well there were 3 gifts, gold, frankincense and myrrh, but that doesn’t mean there were only 3 wise men. There could have been 9 of them and 3 of them had gold and 3 of them had frankincense and 3 of them had myrrh. Or any variation thereof.

And no where in our texts do they have names.

Why are we so hung up on knowing all of the details?

The story tells us a star appeared at the birth of Jesus and some men from the east saw it, and they knew it was foretold to be the star of a new king, so they journeyed to seek him. That is the important part here, they journeyed to seek him.

Do you seek him?

Out

170105When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Baals, and offering incense to idols. Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them. They shall return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me. The sword rages in their cities, it consumes their oracle-priests, and devours because of their schemes. My people are bent on turning away from me. To the Most High they call, but he does not raise them up at all. How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender. I will not execute my fierce anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and no mortal, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath. They shall go after the LORD, who roars like a lion; when he roars, his children shall come trembling from the west. They shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria; and I will return them to their homes, says the LORD. (Hosea 11:1-11, NRSV)

So who is called out of Egypt? Jesus or Israel?

Well the reading starts with when Israel was a child… So it is about Israel, who as a nation was held in slavery in Egypt.

But Jesus was called out of Egypt too after Herod died and it was safe for him to return to Nazareth.

God’s children are watched over by him, and he leads them to the places they need to be.

So heed his calling and follow where he leads, even when you don’t understand. He will always be there!

Light

170104Arise, shine; for your light has come,
and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
For darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples;
but the LORD will arise upon you,
and his glory will appear over you.
Nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
Lift up your eyes and look around;
they all gather together, they come to you;
your sons shall come from far away,
and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms.
Then you shall see and be radiant;
your heart shall thrill and rejoice,
because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you,
the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
A multitude of camels shall cover you,
the young camels of Midian and Ephah;
all those from Sheba shall come.
They shall bring gold and frankincense,
and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD.
(Isaiah 60:1-6, NRSV)

Darkness covers the earth, but we can rejoice for the light has come.

Nations will be drawn to the light. Lift up your eyes and look around and see the thrill of peoples being drawn to the light!

Praise the Lord that the light has come and continues to shine through all of us!

Forget

170103Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing! For the LORD has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his suffering ones. But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me, my Lord has forgotten me.” Can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me. Your builders outdo your destroyers, and those who laid you waste go away from you. Lift up your eyes all around and see; they all gather, they come to you. As I live, says the LORD, you shall put all of them on like an ornament, and like a bride you shall bind them on. (Isaiah 49:13-18, NRSV)

Can the Lord forget us?

Can a mother forget her nursing child?

Can a parent not remember their child!

Even when the child does things that the parents don’t like, or destroys the relationship, the parent will never forget that child nor not love them. God will never forget you or forsake you. No matter what God will love you and that promise will never be erased.

Hope!

170102Thus says the LORD:
A voice is heard in Ramah,
lamentation and bitter weeping.
Rachel is weeping for her children;
she refuses to be comforted for her children,
because they are no more.
Thus says the LORD:
Keep your voice from weeping,
and your eyes from tears;
for there is a reward for your work, says the LORD:
they shall come back from the land of the enemy;
there is hope for your future, says the LORD:
your children shall come back to their own country.
(Jeremiah 31:15-17, NRSV)

There is hope for your future!

Hope is expecting things when there is no reason to expect them.

Hope is believing that God will always be there, even when we can not see God.

Hope is that which keeps us going on days when we would otherwise give up.

Hope is the promise of God.

Hold on to hope!
