mercy

170202And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples.  When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.” (Matthew 9:10-13, NRSV)

what does it mean that God desires mercy, not sacrifice?

Doesn’t God give us mercy? And the Old Testament says that we have specific sacrifices to do for specific things.

So what does that mean?

God wants us to be more focused on giving out His mercy than on doing the right thing according to the Law. Not that sacrifice wasn’t important, but that will be taken care of.

We need to focus on giving the mercy we have received to others.

That is what is most important!

stumbling block

foolishness...For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength. Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 18-31, NRSV)

We preach Christ crucified a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.

It is a stumbling block and foolishness because it can’t be understood and it causes us to trip up.

The cool thing about a stumbling block is though that usually when you trip or stumble on something you turn around and look to see what it was that you tripped on.

And the foolishness to those who don’t know is the power to give us life eternal. It is beyond our understanding that God would work in this way, but God saves us through the foolishness of the world.

This is the power of God, to take what the world sees as weak and turn it into the most powerful thing ever!

What makes you blessed?

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
(Matthew 5:1-12, NRSV)

What makes one blessed? Or to put that in a term we use every day what makes one successful?

How do we determine success?

Do you have a big bank account? A nice new fancy car? The newest phone? The best electronic devices?

Do these things make one successful? Do these things make you blessed?

Maybe according to the world and the prosperity gospel. But not to Jesus.

Jesus says that you are blessed when you seek after him because you can’t do it on your own. Blessed are you when people revile you because of me. Blessed are you when you seek for justice for others and have all justice removed from you.

You see we live in a world where it is about us first, but in the kingdom of God it is about the other first. God gave His Son so you could be in a relationship with Him. He thought of you over His own Son. And He wants you to think of the other before yourself.

You see God requires us:
To Do Justice
Love Kindness
and to Walk deliberately with Him!

So look out for the other first. And He will always fill you back up!

What is required?

170131Hear what the LORD says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the LORD, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the LORD has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. “O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised, what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the saving acts of the LORD.” “With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:1-8, NRSV)

This is a court case. The Lord is asking the Israelites what their beef is. Bring your case before the mountains. But God says what have I done that you would turn against me?

I know what I have done, I freed you from slavery. I sent you messengers, like Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. I delivered you from Kings and their prophets.

And what can the people do to please God, what offering is enough, thousands of rams? Ten thousand rivers of oil? The firstborn? (Which God gives for them!)

No none of these are enough. But the law is clear what is required by God:

Do Justice
Love Kindness
Walk deliberately with God!

We need to choose to do things justly. We need to make sure justice is done even if it means we do not get what we want.

We need to love being kind and always show kindness to everyone.

And we need to walk intentionally or deliberately with God. This is a choice we make to follow where God is leading us.

Even when this means we are pushed out of our comfort zone and things do not go the way we want them or expect them to. We need to follow where God is leading us.

lowly raised

170130It shall be said, “Build up, build up, prepare the way, remove every obstruction from my people’s way.” For thus says the high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with those who are contrite and humble in spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite. For I will not continually accuse, nor will I always be angry; for then the spirits would grow faint before me, even the souls that I have made. Because of their wicked covetousness I was angry; I struck them, I hid and was angry; but they kept turning back to their own ways. I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will lead them and repay them with comfort, creating for their mourners the fruit of the lips. Peace, peace, to the far and the near, says the LORD; and I will heal them. (Isaiah 57:14-19, NRSV)

The Lord will be with those who humbly follow Him.

Those who are empty of themselves and follow where the Lord leads them, God will lift them from the lowly positions they might find themselves in. God will be with them and heal them.

God will raise the lowly and heal them.

Blessed? Really!

170129When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him.

These are not the things that I want to be when I think I am blessed.

Poor in money or spirit doesn’t make me blessed.

Mourning doesn’t make me blessed.

Being hungry doesn’t make me blessed.

Being persecuted doesn’t make me blessed.

But like most things Jesus touches, it is turned upside down. Because when the world thinks you are blessed, you have received your reward, but when you are mocked by the world, that is when God lifts you up.

So look for God’s blessing, not the blessing of the world!

whom shall I fear

170128The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh—my adversaries and foes—they shall stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident. One thing I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock. Now my head is lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD. Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me!  “Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!” Your face, LORD, do I seek.  Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation! (Psalm 27:1-9, NRSV)

What is there to be afraid of?

We all are afraid of something. But do we need to let fear keep us from living?

No. God is our stronghold. He will overcome everything that comes our way.

He will protect us, and encamp around us. He will keep us safe and shelter us.

There is nothing to fear in the light of the Lord!

at work

170127Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without murmuring and arguing, so that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine like stars in the world. It is by your holding fast to the word of life that I can boast on the day of Christ that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. But even if I am being poured out as a libation over the sacrifice and the offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you—and in the same way you also must be glad and rejoice with me. (Philippians 2:12-18, NRSV)

Work out your own salvation. I admit I have had issues with this verse, but we can read no verse in a vacuum and must look around it to find the meaning. For it is God who is working in you.

God is working in you, to enable you to work out your salvation and to find joy in doing His will.

And we should do all of these things without murmuring or arguing, so that His love may be shown to the world.

So slow down and let God work.

deceive

170126Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be associated with them. For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light—for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” (Ephesians 5:6-14, NRSV)

Everything done in the dark will be exposed to the light.

So do not deceive yourself. God knows your heart and where you are.

And do not be deceived by others, who will lead you astray from where God has led you.

Live as children of the light producing fruit that lasts and shows forth His grace.

not the righteous but sinners

170125As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.  And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.” (Matthew 9:9-13, NRSV)

Jesus did not come to call the righteous but sinners, for the healthy have no need of a hospital or a doctor.

So then the righteous are those who are already in right with God.

I like to think of it as the righteous are those who think they know what God wants and are doing it and therefore don’t need God. Sinners are those who know they have messed up and know they can’t fix it on their own. They need help.

Until we admit we need help, there is no helping us.

So are you righteous or a sinner?
