When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, “The Lord needs them.” And he will send them immediately.’ This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, ‘Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’ When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, ‘Who is this?’ The crowds were saying, ‘This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.’ (Matthew 21:1-11, NRSV)
Jesus is entering Jerusalem for the last time! Here He enters as the triumphant king as the messiah was to be.
The only problem is He is not the triumphant king that we want or expect. Hosanna to the Son of David! Come and free us and be our leader! Bring us to the place God has for us.
You see we think we need something that God does not have in the plan. We want Jesus to be a superman and to be our military king to set us free. We need a hero, and a king that dies on a cross is not in our plan.
But you see when it comes down to it, what do we really need?
It is interesting to me, that in the gospel of Matthew there is only one thing it ever says that Jesus needs.
When you think about what you need what is it?
Food. Shelter. Water. Companionship.
True… But I am sure we can come up with other things we think we need.
But the only thing that Matthew ever says Jesus needs is a donkey and her colt. Jesus needs a donkey to fulfill scripture, and that is all He ever needs. You see He is focused on Father and knows that His daddy will not let His needs go unmet.
We too can trust that our Daddy God will meet our needs, and provide for us. So the next time you think you need something, think hard and pray for our daddy to show you if it is really a need.
