call

Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot, and all the possessions that they had gathered, and the persons whom they had acquired in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram, and said, ‘To your offspring I will give this land.’ So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. (Genesis 12:1-7, NRSV)

Have you ever felt the need to do something that seemed odd to everyone around you?

Have you ever done something and wondered as you were doing why you were doing this?

Imaging Abram, who was 75 years old, leaving the land he had always lived in to pursue what God was leading him to do. He left everything behind he had known for 75 years to go to  new land and follow God where He was leading.

Yes Abram had a promise that he would be the father of a great nation, but we have great promises, yet how many of us follow the call when it comes?

I remember when I was discerning my call to ordained ministry we had a gathering at the synod office of all of us entering the process at that point in time. We had a table full of items and as a group we had to chose one item for each person. After all the groups had chosen their objects the leader went to the table to see what was left. One thing that I remember was left was  cell phone. Obviously none of us had received the “call” from God!

But we run from the call. Even though most if us aren’t 75 when the phone rings….

We run from the call even though we are promised we will never be alone….

We run from the call even we aren’t called to leave everything behind and go to a completely strange land…

Stop running and answer the call, and live into the life that He has for you!
