Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High and abides under the shadow of the Almighty, Shall say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my stronghold, my God, in whom I put my trust.’ Because you have made the Lord your refuge and the Most High your stronghold, There shall no evil happen to you, neither shall any plague come near your tent. For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. They shall bear you in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and adder; the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. Because they have set their love upon me, therefore will I deliver them; I will lift them up, because they know my name. They will call upon me and I will answer them; I am with them in trouble, I will deliver them and bring them to honor. With long life will I satisfy them and show them my salvation. (Psalm 91:1-2; 9-16 NRSV)
Do you dwell in the shelter of the Lord?
Do you abide in the shadow of the Almighty?
One might ask how do you know you do this? How can you be sure that you are dwelling in the shelter the lord provides, and staying in the shadow of the Almighty?
First of all what does it mean to be in the shadow of the Almighty? To dwell in the shelter of the Lord seems clear. You are living in the protection of the Lord. But to abide in the shadow, what does that mean?
Well to be in someone’s shadow means you are close to them. Are you close to God? Are you in the shadow He casts as He walks in the sun?
And if so how do you know?
Well if you can walk through the valley of the shadow of death and not be afraid you are.
If you can stay your course even when it seems the world is against you, you are.
If you can keep your head up even when it seems that evil and darkness have won, you are.
If you still believe that God is for you and you cling to the hope that only He can give in the face of what would make most people break down and give up, you are.
Because only through the strength of God are we able to walk and move and continue in the mission He has given us. So do not lose hope and walk in His shadow…
