Where does eternal life come from? Where do we obtain glory?
Is eternal life something we can earn? And thus keep a set of rules, or a code and do the right things and thus work our way into heaven? Most of us will say, “by no means.” We know that we are saved by grace through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ, as he comes to us as a baby in a manger, and then walks the road to Calvary to the cross to die for you, to die for all. Eternal life is not something we earn. It is a gift.
And where do we seek glory? If you are like most, we like to have people tell us good job. We like to hear people enjoyed something we did, or learned something because of something we said, or we in someway effected the life of someone other than ourselves… We seek glory in places we should not seek it. We do things to be noticed and not because we are driven by the love of a Father who gives His only son to die for us, we are motivated by selfish gain and motives. This glory will not last, but will be swept away, because Moses spoke of Jesus and his coming and the law and the prophets points to him. And in all of the scripture there is not eternal life, but the scriptures point to Jesus, in whom we have a relationship with the father and thus have eternal life. The written word of God, points us to Emmanuel, the incarnate word of God – the source of eternal life.
Gracious and loving savior, fill us so with your spirit that we see your word and the way that it points us to you, incarnate in our lives. Guide us to glory in you and to be so filled with your love and mercy that we seek not glory from our fellow man, but we seek to follow after you. Help us to not to think our eternal existence is something we can obtain by following some code, but remind us that it is a living relationship with you. Amen.
